CPCS Approved Training

The CPCS scheme is the most widely recognised card scheme for plant operators in the UK. It has many benefits for individuals and employers from guaranteeing you access to any construction site in the UK to allowing you to receive a levy grant (if eligible).

The scheme was revamped in 2007 and now consists of two separate parts.

The first part of the CPCS technical test is the theory test which assesses the knowledge of the operator in relation to health and safety, working on site and operating the category of machine chosen. This test is carried out on a one to one basis with a qualified CPCS tester and delivered orally with a 60 minute time limit. The tester will ask a question and the operator will give their answer which is then scored for relevance and depth and recorded onto a dictaphone.

The second part of the CPCS technical test is the practical test. This assesses the operators ability on the machine chosen to carry out various work related tasks safely and competently. All categories begin with pre start checks and then appropriate tasks for the individual machine with varying time limits from 60 minutes to 2hrs and 45 mins.

On successful completion of both parts of the technical tests the operator will be awarded a Red CPCS trained operator card. As it stands at the moment this card has a 2 year expiry date and within the 2 years the operator must complete a NVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations to upgrade to a Blue CPCS competent operator card.
